Ashoka the Great and the Kalinga War

Ashoka (r. 268–232 BCE) was the third Mauryan emperor whose reign marked the zenith of the empire’s political and cultural reach. His campaign against the coastal kingdom of Kalinga in 261 BCE proved to be the only major war he fought after accession—and the catalyst for his dramatic turn toward non-violence and dhamma (righteous conduct).
