Early Life and Renunciation
Mahavira, born Vardhamana in c. 599 BCE, was a prince of the Nāya clan in present-day Bihar. At age 30 he renounced royal life and possessions in search of spiritual truth. For twelve and a half years he practiced severe austerities before attaining kevala jnana, or omniscience.
